Artist Statement
My paintings explore the relationship between nature, perception and visual structure.
I combine figurative imagery with geometric systems, repetition, symmetry, patterns and optical effects. Recognisable forms can dissolve into patterns, while abstract structures can begin to suggest landscapes, organisms or spaces.
I am particularly fascinated by structures that appear when nature is observed at different scales. Flowers, insects, roots, water and microscopic forms contain patterns and repetitions that can appear almost geometric.
At the same time, I am interested in perception itself. Repetition, contrasting structures and optical movement can make an image appear unstable or create the impression that forms are expanding, contracting or moving through space.
Some of my works also incorporate mythological figures and symbols as another way of exploring the relationship between humans and nature.
Across these different approaches, I am interested in how small structures, patterns and individual elements connect to form larger visual and natural systems.
